–Argentina Murphy, Director of Human Resources, Georgia Urology
Members and friends, meet Argentina Murphy. While Argentina has lived in the Atlanta-area long enough to call it home, she is originally from the Bronx. Argentina is currently the Director of Human Resources at Georgia Urology. In her role, she and her team are responsible for providing Human Resources support to an organization of 400 employees. Working with a small Human Resources Department to service such a large group means that she must be a Jill-of-all-trades, touching on all of the general HR areas such as compensation, benefits, employee relations, and recruitment, to name a few.
It is a challenging role, but one of the greatest challenges of the role is recruiting a good team of employees for the organization. Bringing on high-quality people who are also committed to the team is a huge challenge.
I’m sure that anybody in a position that plays a role in the hiring process can relate. Everybody looks good on paper but you never really know how a person will perform until they step onto the playing field.
The executive management team also knows that the input from Human Resources is important as well when it comes to acquiring and retaining top talent.
One of my most satisfying moments here was when I was invited to participate in the Acquisitions & Mergers group. It’s a pretty closed group consisting of the CEO and some of the physicians. It was a good feeling to know that the value that I brought to my role as the voice for the Human Resources function in my organization was impactful enough for them to invite me to be a part of these discussions that will literally shape the organization.
When Argentina is not in the office, one activity that she enjoys very much is ice-skating. I learned from Argentina that there are actually a few indoor ice-skating rinks in the Roswell area and other cities just north of ‘the perimeter’. Another activity that Argentina enjoys when she is not working is volunteering.
I am active in my church and in other organizations like 21st Century Leaders and The Mayor’s Youth Program. Mentorship is extremely important and I would like to see other HR professionals give back and be good mentors. None of our experiences is time wasted, so we could do some good by drawing from those experiences to help guide others. I think if I had a mentor when I was starting out I would have started on this career path a lot sooner. I enjoy working with youth, but I would also like to work with seniors. There is a great need for help working with seniors and retirees in the benefits area.
Have you met Argentina at one of our chapter meetings? Were you looking to connect with other professionals working in the medical industry? Do you ice-skate too and have been searching for someone to swap notes on better execution of your death spiral, counter turn, Ina Bauer? Then come out and meet Argentina and like-minded professionals in Human Resources and other industries at our first chapter meeting of the New Year on Wednesday, January 10, 2018!
