April 1, 2017Desire’e Anthony: Member Spotlight (June 2017)
May 31, 2017“Don’t be afraid to ask questions. If its issue spotting or determining what something means right now, don’t be afraid to pick up the phone; even to double-check information instead of making an assumption.”
-Kristy G. Offitt, Shareholder, Ogletree Deakins
Members and friends, meet member Kristy Offitt. You may have seen her around at various NAAAHR events. What you may not have known is that she is often serving in a dual capacity. Not only is Kristy a member of NAAAHR, but she also represents one of our Corporate Sponsors, Ogletree Deakins (the focus of our new Sponsor Spotlight), where she is an attorney and shareholder.
Originally from the Great State of Tennessee, Kristy moved to the Great(er) State of Georgia and has lived in the Atlanta area since 2010. She has worked with Ogletree Deakins for most of that time specializing in employment litigation and has extensive experience in areas like discrimination, the Family Medical Leave Act, and Fair Labor Standards to name a few. Kristy has acquired such prestigious honors as National Black Lawyers Top 40 Under 40 and Rising Star, Georgia Super Lawyers (though she is quite humble and often leaves her cape and cowl at home). She also finds the time to remain active in national, state, and city Bar Association chapters.
Reflecting on the moment that Kristy first became active with NAAAHR, she recalls, “I had originally heard about NAAAHR through a colleague of mine. I finally had the chance to attend a meeting… After becoming a member, I was trying to figure out ways for Ogletree Deakins to partner with NAAAHR and we became a Corporate Sponsor. We have since worked with NAAAHR to host events such as the Atlanta Hawks NAAAHR Night event and have helped to increase the NAAAHR scholarship fund, making scholarships available for even more deserving students. It has been a good partnership.”
When I asked why NAAAHR?, Kristy responded, “The networking and the exposure. When I attend the meetings the content is great and helpful in areas where I haven’t had a lot of exposure. I also get to meet other professionals who I may not normally have the chance to connect with.”
Kristy’s final words of wisdom:
Things are changing in Employment Law. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. If its issue spotting or determining what something means right now, don’t be afraid to pick up the phone; even to double-check information instead of making an assumption.
…Spoken like a true lawyer. If you haven’t met Kristy in person and would like to hear more, look out for her at upcoming events. Also keep your eyes and ears open for the announcement of NAAAHR’s next Employment Law Update, where Kristy is often a panel member.
